Fire of Love
2022 Sundance Festival Winner
We centered this experience around a Flash Mob Fire Show, a volcano Q&A and a story wall
Katia and Maurice Krafft loved two things — each other and volcanoes. For two decades, the daring French volcanologist couple were seduced by the thrill and danger of this elemental love triangle. In 1991 they lost their lives during a volcanic explosion in Japan's mount Unzen and would leave a legacy that would enrich the knowledge of the natural world forever.
Changing Perceptions
The perception of Sundance in some communities is that it’s inaccessible to the average person, both in cost and in culture.
We were tasked with curating some experiences that created an environment of playful connection, inclusivity, and education.
Connection through storytelling
Sundance tells stories, and rallies communities in support of independent storytelling.
Today we paid a small tribute to Katia and Maurice’s adventurous lives, by having guests share a few life stories of their own.
3 writing prompts:
What’s on your bucket list?
What’s been your greatest accomplishments so far?
What legacy would you like to leave behind?
Once answered, we invited them to hang their cards on the wall attaching them to the movie film reel.
Participants read each others answers and were able to share moments of connection seeing the hopes and aspirations of their fellow lives.
Fire
Our concept weaved elements of fire that erupted just before dusk making the transition from day to night a lively experience setting the stage for the film.
The fire breathing kicked off the show with AC/DC’s Back in Black followed by the fire whips echoing throughout the audience, while the candles provided a more intimate experience for those in the front row.
Finally, we had a local geologist talk about volcanic activity right here in Utah and surrounding area. We even learned not all volcanoes are protruding above ground as in the movies and our science fair projects, some are quite flat.
Step & Repeat
We added a few custom props to the step and repeat for people to enjoy lasting moments with the #sundancelocals
